English

This study assesses the techno-economic feasibility of producing green methanol from captured CO2 in Trinidad and Tobago, using cement manufacturing as a case study. Green methanol can be produced at $1,246/ton, within the global market range of $800–$1,600/ton, with potential for ~30% cost reduction via improved PEM electrolyzer efficiency. Blue methanol is cheaper but emits over three times the CO2 used, while green methanol offers a viable partial decarbonization pathway.

In the global GX context

This paper contributes to the global CCU and e-methanol literature by providing a detailed techno-economic case from a fossil-fuel-dependent small island state, offering insights for transition finance and industrial decarbonization in similar contexts. It aligns with ISSB/TCFD disclosure of transition plans and could inform CDP reporting on CCU investments.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of producing green methanol from captured carbon dioxide (CO2) in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). CO2 emissions were quantified using natural gas (NG) consumption data for 2022, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s default CO2 emission factor for NG combustion. This research focusses on quantifying CO2 emissions from cement manufacturing as a case study to evaluate the implementation of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Renewable electricity sourced from solar energy represents a significant share of the costs for producing green methanol. A system was proposed employing a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for hydrogen production to extract pure CO2 by scrubbing flue gas with aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA). The results show that green methanol can be produced and sold at $1,246 USD/ton within the current global market range between $800 and $1,600 USD per ton. Improving the efficiency of PEM electrolyzers can decrease electricity costs, making green methanol nearly 30% less expensive than the prevailing worldwide price. Moreover, a comparative analysis of blue methanol was made using power from the national grid methanol at a lower cost. However, net CO2 emissions result in over three times of the CO2 used for the process. This study concludes that green methanol production presents a viable pathway for partial decarbonisation, and the proposed system can be implemented in other industrial sectors in T&T.
