English
This poster analyzes AstraZeneca's sustainability strategy in the UK pharmaceutical sector and its alignment with the NHS Net Zero 2040 roadmap. The company has cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by ~68% since 2015 and invested in low-carbon facilities and next-generation inhaler propellants. Challenges remain: retrofitting old factories, high upfront costs, complex Scope 3 emissions, regulatory barriers, and 2028 product-level carbon data requirements.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
This case illustrates how public procurement mandates (NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap) drive corporate decarbonization, relevant to global supply-chain disclosure trends under CSRD and SEC rules. It offers a concrete example of Scope 3 management in the pharmaceutical sector, which is often overlooked in climate disclosure scholarship.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This poster highlights AstraZeneca’s leadership in sustainability within the UK pharmaceutical sector and its alignment with the NHS Net Zero 2040 roadmap. Medicines account for around 25% of the NHS’s carbon footprint, so pharmaceutical companies have a crucial role in decarbonising healthcare. Under the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap, all suppliers must now show carbon‑reduction plans, pushing companies to change how they produce and deliver medicines. The shift affects key stakeholders: NHS England, which drives greener procurement; AstraZeneca’s UK sites and employees, who must adopt eco‑friendly production; supply‑chain and research partners, who risk losing contracts if they don’t align; and patients, who may see reformulated or repackaged products. AstraZeneca is setting an example. It has cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by about 68% since 2015, invested in a low‑carbon Cambridge Discovery Centre, and is developing next‑generation inhaler propellants with far lower global warming potential. These actions strengthen its NHS supplier credentials and investor confidence while supporting system‑wide decarbonisation. Five main challenges remain: retrofitting old factories with limited expertise; high upfront costs under NHS price controls; complex Scope 3 emissions across global supply chains, worsened by Brexit; regulatory barriers that can slow green innovation; and new 2028 requirements for product‑level carbon data, which are hard to measure accurately. In conclusion, AstraZeneca’s strategy shows how environmental responsibility can create competitive advantage even in a highly regulated market. Strong progress and science‑based targets support compliance and ESG performance, with future work focused on tackling Scope 3 emissions through supply‑chain engagement, ambitious targets, and continued investment in infrastructure and R&D.
