This dataset investigates the geopolitical and socioeconomic impacts of the European Green Deal and EU climate policies on Nigeria's energy sector. It reveals a 'Rentier's Dilemma' where rapid decarbonization strains state revenue and regional stability without robust climate resilience. The data highlights divergence between external and domestic transition timelines, emphasizing a need for asymmetrical timing to prioritize local industrial capacity.

In the global GX context
This paper provides empirical evidence of the geopolitical nature of energy transitions, showing how EU climate policies create structural challenges for fossil-fuel-dependent economies. It contributes to global just transition discourse and highlights the need for asymmetrical timelines in ISSB and transition finance frameworks.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Research Hypothesis & Methodology This dataset was compiled to investigate the geopolitical and socioeconomic implications of the European Green Deal and shifting EU climate policies on Nigeria's energy sector. The central hypothesis posits that while the EU's decarbonization agenda accelerates the demand for a just energy transition, it simultaneously introduces a structural Rentier's Dilemma for Nigeria, wherein rapid decarbonization pressures can strain state revenue and regional stability if not accompanied by robust climate resilience mechanisms and diversified infrastructure investments. The underlying data comprises a curated mix of qualitative policy frameworks, bilateral energy trade metrics, and climate financing allocations spanning recent transition frameworks. Key Findings and Data Trends The data highlights a significant divergence between external decarbonization timelines and domestic energy sustainability needs. Notable findings reveal that current Nigeria–EU cooperation frameworks face systemic bottlenecks in balancing immediate fossil-fuel export reliance with long-term renewable technology transfer. The data demonstrates that financial allocations for climate resilience are frequently offset by the geoeconomic risks of a rapid phase-out of traditional hydrocarbon rents, underscoring a critical need for an asymmetrical transition timeline that prioritizes local industrial capacity. Interpretation and Reuse Potential These findings can be interpreted as empirical evidence that energy transitions are inherently geopolitical processes rather than purely technical or environmental shifts. For scholars, defence strategists, and policy analysts studying EU–Africa energy diplomacy, this dataset serves as a functional baseline to model institutional resilience, energy security vulnerabilities, and strategic cooperation models in the Global South. It can be readily used to conduct comparative analyses on how external decarbonization policies reshape resource governance and regional stability across the Sahel and Sub-Saharan Africa.
