This chapter examines the development of smart grids and their implications for energy governance, citizen participation, and the transition to a low-carbon economy, primarily within the European Union (EU) context. It begins by defining smart grids and locating them within broader technological, regulatory, and ethical frameworks grounded in EU law and international human rights principles. The chapter then explores smart grids as a multivalent instrument capable of supporting energy security, decarbonization, market efficiency, and consumer empowerment, while also introducing risks related to regulation, data governance, and social equity. Subsequent sections analyze the interaction between smart grids and the gig and collaborative economies, highlighting how digitalization, cloud computing, and data-sharing enable new market actors and business models.
