English

BAOMS presents a three-year sustainability strategy (2026-2029) for UK oral and maxillofacial surgery, structured across eight pillars from green theatres to circular procurement and research. Six quantified KPIs with 2027-2029 milestones cover N2O decommissioning, single-use reduction, reusable textiles, virtual follow-up and travel emissions. It positions OMFS to lead surgical engagement with the NHS net zero agenda.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Surgery accounts for an estimated 5.7 MtCO2e (megatonnes of CO2 equivalent) per year in the UK, with operating theatres being three to six times more energy-intensive than other hospital areas. Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) contributes to this footprint through energy use in theatre, volatile anaesthetic gases, single-use consumables, patient and staff travel, and global supply chains with associated labour rights risks. The NHS has committed to net zero for direct emissions by 2040 and for the wider system footprint by 2045. The aim of this editorial is to describe the rationale, evidence base, strategic framework, key performance indicators (KPIs), and governance structure for the BAOMS three-year sustainability strategy 2026-2029. The strategy is structured across eight pillars: 1) prevention and pathway redesign; 2) green theatres; 3) low-emission anaesthesia and medical gases; 4) circular procurement and ethical supply chains; 5) travel, estates, and digital care; 6) measurement and governance; 7) education, culture, and leadership; and 8) research and innovation. Six quantified KPIs with milestones in 2027, 2028, and 2029 cover Green Theatre Checklist compliance, pipeline N2O decommissioning, single-use item reduction, reusable textile adoption, virtual follow-up rate, and travel emission reduction. OMFS is well positioned to lead surgical specialty engagement with the NHS net zero agenda, building on existing quality improvement infrastructure such as Quality and Outcomes in OMFS (QOMS), the FlexFacs training programme, and BAOMS specialty networks. Immediate evidence-based measures - N2O pipeline decommissioning, instrument set rationalisation, and Green Theatre Checklist integration - are available now and should not await longer-term capital investment.
