📄 Abstract(原文)

Climate change severely risks smallholder farmers’ livelihoods in Africa, threatening food security and rural resilience. The study shows that using multiple climate adaptation technologies benefits maize production, income, and poverty reduction, with village cooperatives significantly enhancing this effect. The study utilises a unique three-wave panel data set from the Tanzania National Panel Survey (2008/09, 2010/11, 2012/13). To address selection bias and unobserved heterogeneity, multinomial endogenous switching regressions (MESR) were used along with a panel data estimator employing pooled ordinary least squares (POLS) and selection models based on the Mundlak framework. The combined methodological approach is specifically employed to address unbalanced panel structures and to fully capture both observed and unobserved heterogeneity. My findings reveal that the adoption of CATs significantly improves maize yield and per capita consumption, with synergistic effects observed when climate resilience strategies (i.e. improved maize varieties, irrigation) are combined with sustainable practices (i.e. maize rotation, fertilizer use). This joint adoption of multiple CATs yields the largest welfare gains, reducing the probability of poverty by 22 percentage points and increasing per capita consumption expenditure by USD$273.61. Key determinants of MCAT adoption include rainfall, education, and, notably, active participation in village cooperatives, which significantly amplify the welfare benefits for adopting members. This study emphasises the critical need for a comprehensive approach to climate adaptation and institutional support, offering precise, data-driven insights for targeted policies aimed at building resilient agricultural systems and reducing rural poverty in vulnerable regions.
