English

CO2 hydration to bicarbonate is often rate-limiting for aqueous CO2 capture, and carbonic anhydrase (CA) catalyzes exactly this step. This work explores engineering CA surface display on fast-growing marine cyanobacteria, so that cells passively produce the enzyme on their envelope using only sunlight, CO2, and seawater nutrients. If successful, this offers a self-sustaining route to cheap, scalable CA supply, addressing a key cost barrier to enzymatic CO2 capture.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Enzymatic acceleration of CO2 capture sits within the broader CCUS toolkit that global climate policy (net-zero pathways, Article 6, CCS incentives) relies on. This paper addresses the practical sourcing-cost barrier to deploying carbonic anhydrase at scale, relevant to CCUS cost-reduction scholarship and industrial decarbonization pathways.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Equilibration between CO 2 and the other forms of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is slow under ambient conditions, bottlenecked by the hydration of dissolved CO 2 to form bicarbonate and a proton. This step is often rate-limiting for aqueous CO 2 capture processes under ambient temperature and pressure, and is precisely the chemistry catalyzed by the family of carbonic anhydrase enzymes. As a result, incorporation of carbonic anhydrases (CAs) into various CO 2 capture schemes may be used to accelerate CO 2 hydration, increasing the rates of downstream processes coupled to this DIC equilibrium. While this potential use for CA has been long-studied, extending these basic chemical principles to real applications have been hampered by practical questions of how to economically source carbonic anhydrase enzymes at mass scale. This work explores the use of modified cyanobacterial expression hosts as a potential resolution to that problem. Successful engineering of carbonic anhydrase surface display in fast-growing, marine cyanobacteria would yield a self-sustaining CO 2 hydration catalyst that requires only sunlight, CO 2 itself, and nutrients freely available in seawater, as inputs for passively generating carbonic anhydrases on the cell envelope during cell growth.
