English

A 3D Delft3D hydrodynamic model of tides near Rigolet, Nunatsiavut (Labrador, Canada) was validated against ADCP observations and fed into HOMER Pro to compare tidal, wind, and solar options against the community's diesel grid. Tidal power is unlikely to be viable at current prices, but could contribute significantly with cost reductions or improved low-flow (<2 m/s) turbine design. Wind resources are strong, supporting a mixed-resource hybrid grid for decarbonization.

In the global GX context

This study adds to the global literature on off-grid diesel displacement and hybrid renewable microgrids, offering a replicable modeling workflow (Delft3D + HOMER Pro) for remote coastal communities. It informs just-transition and energy-access debates relevant to TCFD/ISSB disclosure on transition risk in remote operations.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract This paper undertakes a comparative resource assessment of renewable energy for integration into the diesel-reliant off-grid community of Rigolet in Nunatsiavut (within Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada). Due to the coastal setting, a 3D hydrodynamic model of the tides across the Hamilton Inlet and Lake Melville was constructed in Delft3D Flow-FM and validated against acoustic doppler current profiler field observations of currents in the region. Tidal velocity predictions from this model were used to build a synthetic year of predictions for use in HOMER Pro software. The community's existing diesel grid was simulated alongside tidal resources, wind, and solar energy options to evaluate potential emissions and cost savings for Rigolet's future electricity needs. Results show that, at existing tidal energy project prices, tidal power is unlikely to be viable in remote communities. However, with price reductions or improvements in low-flow (<2 m/s) tidal energy convertor design, tidal power may be able to contribute significantly to replacing diesel power in northern coastal communities. Further, HOMER Pro results show that Rigolet has significant wind power resources, enabling pursuit of a mixed-resource hybrid grid as decarbonisation is pursued.
