English

This study builds an integrated optimization framework that co-optimizes operating parameters and the physical design of absorber, stripper, and compression train for post-combustion CO2 capture at Oman's Dhulima field. Using SAFT-VR and eNRTL thermodynamics in Python cross-validated against UniSim, it minimizes the Levelized Cost of CO2 Capture and Compression (LCCC). CAPEX is estimated with corrosion-resistant materials suited to high-salinity, high-ambient-temperature conditions, aiming to narrow the CO2-EOR profitability gap and support Oman's national CCUS roadmap.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As CCUS becomes central to net-zero roadmaps and transition finance under ISSB/TCFD-aligned disclosure, this paper's physics-based LCCC optimization offers a transparent cost reference for CO2-avoided costs, useful for corporate capex justification and national CCUS strategy design beyond the Gulf context.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract The Sultanate of Oman faces a critical imperative to reconcile continued industrialization with its 2050 net-zero commitment. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is recognized as a cornerstone for abating industrial emissions, yet widespread deployment is hindered by the substantial energy penalty and capital intensity of the capture and compression train, which typically accounts for approximately 80% of the total CCUS value-chain cost. Current literature often relies on decoupled, stepwise economic models and regression-based surrogates that fail to capture the non-linear cost scaling inherent in physical design variation. This study develops an integrated, simultaneous optimization framework that bridges high-fidelity process physics and economic reality. Using the Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT-VR) and electrolyte-NRTL (eNRTL) thermodynamic frameworks within Python, cross-validated against UniSim Design, the work simulates a rate-based post-combustion capture system tailored to the flue gas duty of the Dhulima field within the Lekhwair cluster. Unlike traditional models that fix absorber geometry a priori, the proposed monolithic architecture co-optimizes operational parameters solvent loading, stripper feed configuration, and flue-gas bypass together with the physical design of the absorber, stripper, and compression train to minimize the Levelized Cost of CO2 Capture and Compression (LCCC). Capital expenditure is estimated through a standardized factorization method adapted for the high-salinity, high-ambient-temperature conditions of Omani coastal industrial zones through the specification of corrosion-resistant materials. Process-intensification configurations reported in the literature for high-CO2-content flue gases including stripper split feed and lean-vapor compression are screened as candidate architectures for the Dhulima case. The resulting framework is intended to narrow the profitability gap for CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO2-EOR) applications and to provide Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals with a transparent, physics-based reference for CO2-avoided costs and a decision-support tool for Oman's national CCUS roadmap.
