This study partially replaced Portland cement clinker with metakaolin (kaolin clay activated at 800°C) and titanomagnetite tailings to produce low-carbon composite cements. XRD, SEM and mechanical testing showed a dense hardened microstructure with a reactive amorphous aluminosilicate phase, reaching 53.5 MPa compressive strength at 28 days despite reduced clinker content, confirming the potential of these minerals for lower-impact cement.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Reducing the clinker content in Portland cement is considered one of the most romising approaches for the decarbonization of the cement industry. This study investigates the influence of calcined clay and titanomagnetite tailings on the microstructure development and mechanical properties of low-carbon composite cement. Composite cements were produced by partially replacing Portland cement clinker with metakaolin obtained through the thermal activation of kaolin clay at 800 °C and titanomagnetite tailings. The raw materials and cement composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and physical and mechanical testing. The results demonstrated that thermal activation of kaolin clay promoted the formation of highly reactive metakaolin with a predominance of an amorphous aluminosilicate phase. The incorporation of calcined clay and titanomagnetite tailings contributed to the development of a denser hardened cement paste microstructure while maintaining high mechanical performance despite the reduction in clinker content. The maximum compressive strength achieved after 28 days of curing was 53.5 MPa. The obtained results confirm the potential of these mineral constituents forthe production of low-carbon composite cements with enhanced performance and reduced environmental impact
