English
This oral presentation argues that Australia's energy security and decarbonisation goals require reducing subsurface uncertainty in hydrocarbon exploration, CCS, and storage projects, which depends on strategic new seismic data acquisition. It demonstrates that reprocessing legacy data is insufficient and new acquisition enables successful exploration and risk mitigation, using examples from the Gulf of America, Nigeria, and Indonesia.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
As global CCS deployment accelerates, the role of high-quality subsurface data becomes critical. This paper highlights that new seismic acquisition, not just reprocessing, is a necessary enabling investment for safe and effective carbon storage, relevant to regulatory frameworks like the EU CCS Directive and U.S. Section 45Q.
Highlights the technical and economic case for investing in new seismic surveys to unlock CCS and storage projects.
Provides evidence that new seismic acquisition reduces exploration and storage risk, supporting investment decisions in CCS sites.
Indicates that policies should encourage or mandate new seismic data acquisition for CCS licensing to ensure safe storage.
📄 Abstract(原文)
Presented on 20 May 2026: Session 10 Australia’s energy security and decarbonisation objectives depend on reducing subsurface uncertainty across hydrocarbon exploration, carbon capture and storage, and subsurface storage projects. Seismic data are the most reliable method of imaging the subsurface. Seismic data quality is a first-order control on subsurface uncertainty, exploration success, and risk mitigation. While reprocessing legacy seismic data can deliver improvements, it is fundamentally constrained by the design of the original acquisition. Using examples from Gulf of America, Nigeria, and Indonesia, this paper demonstrates that, in many settings, new seismic acquisition is a necessary enabling investment to support titleholder-led interpretation, good technical practice, and the delivery of energy transition objectives.
