English

Using G20 data from 2005-2023, this study tests urbanization as a mediator between renewable energy use and GDP per capita. It finds that about 94.6% of renewable energy's long-run growth effect (elasticity 0.285) flows indirectly through urbanization, with the effect nearly five times stronger in upper-middle-income economies. Policy implications highlight the need to coordinate urban planning with clean energy transitions.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, this study contributes to the literature on renewable energy and economic growth by identifying urbanization as a key transmission channel. It supports policy frameworks like the SDGs and just transition initiatives, emphasizing the need for integrated urban and energy planning, relevant for ISSB-aligned transition plans and national climate strategies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

While a good deal of research explores how renewable energy relates to economic growth, we still know surprisingly little about the exact pathway through which cleaner energy raises people's incomes. This study examines whether urbanisation plays a mediating role between renewable energy use and GDP per capita across 20 G20 nations from 2005 to 2023. Using the Baron-Kenny mediation framework alongside robust second-generation panel econometric tools, it can be seen that roughly 94.6% of renewable energy's long-run growth effect, estimated at 0.285 elasticity, flows indirectly through urbanisation. Notably, this indirect channel is nearly five times stronger in upper-middle-income G20 economies than in wealthier ones. These findings carry a clear policy message: urbanisation is not just a backdrop to clean energy transitions but is arguably their most powerful income-generating mechanism, especially in rapidly growing economies where city expansion and energy planning remain poorly coordinated.
