English
This study models post-fire stream dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics by incorporating fire-altered terrestrial carbon pools. Using the 2021 Schneider Springs Fire in Washington, the coupled ELM-BGC and ATS-PFLOTRAN models show an order-of-magnitude increase in fresh litter carbon and DOC production from burned areas. The memory effect of fire-altered carbon pools reduces prediction error in stream DOC concentrations.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Post-fire stream dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is difficult to mechanistically predict because wildfire alters both hydrologic transport and the terrestrial carbon sources that supply DOC. We test whether fire-altered carbon pools create disturbance memory that is later expressed in stream DOC after the 2021 Schneider Springs Fire, Washington. ELM-BGC represented fire-driven changes in vegetation, litter, coarse woody debris, and soil carbon pools, while ATS-PFLOTRAN routed and reacted the resulting DOC sources through a watershed hydro-biogeochemical model. Fire produced an order-of-magnitude increase in fresh litter carbon relative to no-fire and increased burned-area DOC production, with normalized fire-minus-no-fire differences of +0.15, +0.48, and +0.27 during successive dry/fire seasons. ELM-BGC-derived source memory reduced stream DOC prediction error at the fire-impacted monitoring sites relative to a no-ELM benchmark. These results show that post-fire DOC response reflects terrestrial carbon-pool memory exported through hydrologic connectivity.
