English

Using nationally representative SUSENAS data (2022–2024, >1M households) and a CLA-EEIO framework with 2SLS/DML-IV, this study finds digital finance adoption raises Indonesian household carbon emissions, driven by indirect emissions in purchased goods and services. Yet it also shifts spending toward lower-carbon categories and reduces energy expenditure share, suggesting untapped potential for cleaner lifestyles without lower total emissions.

In the global GX context

Adds emerging-market household-level evidence to the climate-finance literature, relevant to transition finance debates on whether financial inclusion aligns with decarbonization. It complements TCFD/ISSB disclosure scholarship by quantifying consumption-side (Scope 3-adjacent) emissions in a developing economy.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Digital finance is reshaping household consumption in emerging economies, but its carbon implications remain uncertain. This study examines the effect of digital finance adoption on household carbon footprints in Indonesia using nationally representative SUSENAS repeated cross-sections for 2022–2024, comprising more than one million household observations, and a hybrid Consumer Lifestyle Approach–Environmentally Extended Input–Output framework. Endogeneity is addressed using two-stage least squares. The results show that digital finance adoption increases total household carbon emissions. The increase is concentrated in indirect emissions embodied in purchased goods and services and extends across both basic and non-basic consumption. Channel estimates show that digital finance adoption raises real per-capita consumption and is associated with a greater share of expenditure allocated to relatively low-carbon categories and a lower share of household energy expenditure. This dual environmental pattern suggests that digital finance has the potential to support cleaner household lifestyles, although this potential has not yet translated into lower total emissions. The positive effect is observed across rural and urban households, income groups, and payment- and credit-oriented services. The findings remain robust across alternative measures and estimation approaches, including DML-IV and Kinky Least Squares.
