English

This study calibrates fibre-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) response to 1–10 kHz sonic signals for offshore CCS monitoring. Using a water-filled acoustic pulse tube, DAS detected signals but with lower SNR than a hydrophone. Fibre installation and coupling strongly affect sensitivity, while hydrostatic pressure alone does not. It offers an initial calibration framework for repurposing existing fibre infrastructure for CCS acoustic monitoring.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Offshore CCS is scaling globally under net-zero pathways, and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) is central to credibility for investors and regulators. This work advances low-cost acoustic monitoring by repurposing existing fibre-optic infrastructure, relevant to emerging CCS MRV standards and the integrity requirements of carbon removal accounting.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study investigates the response of fibre-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to sonic-frequency acoustic signals (1–10 kHz) relevant to offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) monitoring. Laboratory experiments were conducted using a water-filled acoustic pulse tube, with DAS measurements compared against a calibrated hydrophone under controlled pressure conditions. DAS successfully detected the applied acoustic signals, although with lower signal-to-noise ratio than the hydrophone. The results also show that fibre installation and coupling conditions strongly influence DAS sensitivity, while hydrostatic pressure alone does not determine the response. These findings provide an initial calibration framework for assessing the potential of existing fibre-optic infrastructure for acoustic monitoring of offshore CCS sites.
