English

This study develops an LLM-based (Claude 3.5 Sonnet) ESG analytics pipeline to automatically extract six indicators from 12 ESG reports (2021–2024) of three leading Chinese logistics firms: SF Express, Cainiao, and JD Logistics. Achieving 94.7% agreement (κ=0.89), it demonstrates reliable LLM-driven ESG analytics and reveals three distinct digital-enabled green transition pathways shaped by each firm's business model.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper advances the AI×ESG intersection by demonstrating a reliable LLM pipeline for automated ESG indicator extraction, relevant to global disclosure frameworks (ISSB, CSRD) where structured data from unstructured reports is increasingly demanded. The comparative pathways offer insights for logistics decarbonization strategies worldwide.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The logistics industry faces mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions, and digital technologies have been increasingly recognized as key enablers of green transition. However, existing research has primarily focused on establishing correlations between digitalization and environmental performance, leaving the underlying mechanisms—and the reasons for divergent pathways across firms—largely unexplored. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comparative case analysis of three leading logistics enterprises in China: SF Express, Cainiao, and JD Logistics, using a novel LLM-based computational ESG data analytics pipeline that automates the extraction of structured indicators from unstructured ESG reports. Methodologically, we develop a three-stage computational pipeline that integrates large language models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet) with structured prompt optimization, enabling automated extraction of six ESG indicators from 12 corporate reports (2021–2024). A three-round verification protocol achieves 94.7% agreement (Cohen's κ = 0.89), demonstrating the reliability of LLM-based ESG analytics. Our findings reveal three distinct digital-enabled green transition pathways: operational efficiency-driven (SF Express), platform-ecosystem empowerment-driven (Cainiao), and asset-heavy infrastructure-driven (JD Logistics). The object of digital empowerment—whether operational processes, ecosystem partners, or physical assets—is fundamentally shaped by the firm's business model. Enterprises with different resource endowments can achieve substantial green outcomes through distinct yet equally effective pathways.
