English
This work develops a hydrodynamic design methodology for cross-flow hollow fiber membrane contactors (HFMC) enabling low-pressure CO2 capture via physical absorption. Using Ergun and Hagen-Poiseuille pressure-drop models, optimal bundle dimensions are derived for a biogas upgrading unit, requiring a numbering-up strategy of 38-98 parallel bundles. A novel multi-bundle shell design with CFD-verified uniform flow achieves a total specific energy of 0.066 kWh/m3, at least three times lower than conventional biogas upgrading technologies.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Carbon capture by physical absorption is attractive because of the low energy required for solvent regeneration, but it is not feasible at near-atmospheric pressure in direct-contact devices such as packed columns due to operational and hydrodynamic constraints. This work presents the hydrodynamic design and modeling of an innovative cross-flow hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) system for CO 2 capture from atmospheric effluents, such as flue gas and biogas, that overcomes these limitations. Pressure drop relationships based on Ergun and Hagen-Poiseuille equations are established respectively in the liquid and gas phase. These are used to develop an original systematic sizing methodology, relating operating constraints and pressure drops to the fiber bundle dimensions. The methodology is applied to estimate the optimal dimensions of the fiber bundles of a biogas upgrading unit based on physical absorption in water at 20°C. In order to limit the gas and liquid pressure drop in the process, the fiber bundles must remain small, with an outer diameter of 0.237 m and a length of 1.15 m for the absorber and even lower dimensions for the two strippers (0.124 m diameter and 0.84 and 0.49 m lengths for the low and high vacuum stripper). This imposes limited flow rates in a given fiber bundle, thus necessitating a numbering-up strategy. The biogas upgrading unit requires the use of 38 fiber bundles in parallel for the absorption, as well as 56 fiber bundles for the low-vacuum stripping and 98 for the high-vacuum stripping, in order to treat the total raw gas flow rate. In order to facilitate the numbering-up, an original multi-bundle design is proposed, involving 19 parallel fiber bundles in a single shell. Three-dimensional CFD simulations numerically support the near-uniform flow distribution in this design without significant extra hydraulic resistance. The total pressure drop of the liquid in the process loop is 0.2 bar leading to a specific energy requirement of the process due to liquid pumping of 0.0087 kWh m −3 G0 NTP . The total specific energy characterizing the carbon capture process, including liquid and vacuum gas pumping, is 0.066 kWh m −3 G0 NTP which is at least three times lower than that of conventional biogas upgrading technologies. This new process enables thus the capture of carbon from low-pressure gas streams with low energy consumption and compact equipment.
