English

This review assesses Nigeria's solar energy potential and its role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions toward near-zero emissions. Despite abundant sunlight, utilization remains grossly low; solar power can supply remote and off-grid areas and reduce fossil fuel dependence, though at substantial infrastructure cost. Findings offer a policy framework for investors and governments.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

日本企業にとって直接の規制接点は薄いが、アフリカ新興国での再エネ事業・オフグリッド投資機会や、途上国向け脱炭素ファイナンスの文脈で参考になる。

In the global GX context

Adds a Global South perspective to the energy-transition literature, relevant to international climate finance and just-transition debates, though it sits outside the TCFD/ISSB disclosure mainstream.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Purpose: The global effect of greenhouse gas emissions is obvious looking at the unprecedented climate experiences recently and the need to curtail this emission is also obvious. This review aims to critically analyze the potential utility of solar energy in order to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and ensure near zero emissions in Nigeria. Literature Review: Literature have shown that energy radiated is about 3.8x1023 kW which is about 1.082 million ton of oil equivalent per day; this is also about 4000 times the current crude oil production in Nigeria and about 13, 000 times the natural gas daily production. On these basis, current status of solar use and future potentials became an important and interesting subject of study. Methodology: Information used in this study involved the library collections, scholarly publications and textbooks. Information from notable renewable energy websites were used. These data were collected and critically evaluated. Results and Conclusions: The country is blessed with abundant sunlight due to its advantageous location but is grossly under-utilized. It can therefore be concluded that solar power can provide reliable electricity to remote and off-grid areas and thus, reduces the country’s dependence on fossil fuel, though at substantial infrastructural cost. Practical Implication: Results from the findings of this study can serve as policy framework for implementing rural or supplementary electricity provision for investors and governments at all levels in the country. Originality: This work provides basis or justification for investment opportunities and thus information useful for investors is contained.
