English
This study investigates whether trust in politicians predicts support for a wide range of climate policies, including fuel bans, grants, EV incentives, and agricultural measures. It also examines the moderating role of rurality. Using multilevel regression on survey data, it aims to provide insights for policy design.

In the global GX context
This paper contributes to the global discourse on climate policy acceptability by analyzing trust as a key driver across multiple policy types. It offers comparative insights for policymakers designing package deals of policies to build public support, relevant for jurisdictions like the EU and US.
Highlights the role of trust in politicians as a consistent predictor across diverse climate policies, and introduces rurality as a moderator.
Offers evidence that building public trust in political leaders may be as important as policy design for gaining support for climate measures.
Suggests that policy packages should account for varying trust levels across regions (urban vs rural) to ensure broad acceptance.
📄 Abstract(原文)
I will investigate whether trust in politicians as a source of information about climate change is a predictor of support for environmental policies. I have focused on trust in politicians in part due to its role within the literature as a predictor of support for climate taxes. I wish to provide a study that analyses a wide range of environmental policies which serve different objectives. I will use the following variables: Dependent variables: 1. Support for banning peat, coal, and oil for home heating purposes 2. Support for government grants to encourage residential and commercial building owners to install cleaner and more efficient heating systems 3. Support for government grants to make electric vehicles more affordable 4. Support for higher taxes on cars that use petrol and diesel 5. Support for increased Government investment in public transport such as trains instead of motorways 6. Support for building new infrastructure such as pylons or substations in the local area to support the increased use of renewable energy 7. Support for reducing the size of the national cattle herd to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 8. Support for increasing forest areas in the locality to offset greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture Independent variable: 1. How much do you trust or distrust the following as a source of information about climate change? Political leaders Furthermore, I plan to expand on the literature by investigating the role of rurality in affecting to what extent trust can predict support. I will also perform a breakdown into agricultural and non-agricultural policies. Moderating variable: Rurality (whether a citizen lives in a city / large town / small town / rural area) Controls: 1. Age 2. Gender 3. Educational attainment 4. Employment status I will use a multilevel modelling regression model to examine the relationhsip between trust in politicians and support for policies, and will then perform moderation analysis using rurality as the moderating variable. My method is explained in more detail in the research question section.
