English

This study assesses Spain's pathways to 2050 energy self-sufficiency through renewable electricity, green hydrogen production/export, and solar thermal industrial heat. Using the TIMES-Sinergia model across four scenarios, results show full electricity decarbonization by 2050 and hydrogen export surplus (204–31 PJ). Concentrated solar heat with thermal storage penetrates priority industrial sectors modestly. Findings support policymakers and investors on Spain's renewable and hydrogen potential.

In the global GX context

Spain's integrated analysis of electricity, hydrogen, and industrial heat pathways offers a model for countries targeting energy self-sufficiency. The hydrogen export surplus insights are relevant to global hydrogen trade discussions. The thermal storage findings inform industrial decarbonisation strategies, especially for medium-temperature heat.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Spain’s role in Europe’s energy self-sufficiency was assessed within the Man0EUvRE project through three dimensions: renewable electricity production potential, green hydrogen production and export potential, and industrial decarbonisation via concentrated solar heat and thermal energy storage. Using four transition scenarios and detailed modelling with TIMES-Sinergia, the study analysed Spain’s pathways to 2050. Results show that the Spanish electricity system is expected to become fully decarbonised by 2050. Spain could become a producer of green hydrogen, with an estimated surplus for exportation between 204 and 31 PJ by 2050, supported by electrolysis. Regarding the potential of concentrated solar heat and thermal energy storage to deliver medium temperature heat, the analysis demonstrates modest but increasing penetration in priority industrial sectors. The thermal storage system plays a fundamental role in extending operating hours beyond peak solar availability. Cross-model comparisons confirm robust structural trends and highlight uncertainties in technology deployment. The findings support policymakers and investors by identifying Spain’s strong potential as a renewable leader and hydrogen exporter.
