English

The EU-funded BETTED project proposes a systemic shift of the dairy value chain from carbon-intensive operations to a circular, energy self-sufficient model. It integrates biogas from manure and solar power, redesigns heating/cooling via absorption chillers, heat pumps and cogeneration, and valorizes waste through industrial symbiosis. A toolbox maps energy use, environmental impact and economics across the chain, incorporating behavioral, financing and policy dimensions.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The dairy value chain contributes significantly to the food sector, but is also one of its most energy- and resource-intensive sub-sectors. To address the urgent need for decarbonization, the EU-funded BETTED project ("Boosting the Energy Transition of Dairy value chain", LIFE22-CET project grant number 101120856) proposes a fundamental shift from the traditional, carbon-intensive dairy value chain towards a circular and more energy self-sufficient dairy supply chain with limited carbon emissions. This transition is the focus of the BETTED framework and redefines how energy, materials, and waste are managed across all stages of production and distribution. Rather than approaching sustainability through isolated interventions, BETTED takes a systemic and cross-sectoral perspective, moving from reliance on non-renewable energy sources and high CO2 emissions to the integration of renewable energy sources, such as biogas from manure fermentation and solar, along with the implementation of energy efficiency measures, leading to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the valorization of byproducts and waste. The project's vision is grounded in integrating these renewables into existing farm and processing operations, reimagining heating and cooling demands through technologies like absorption chillers, heat pumps, and cogeneration, and viewing waste not as a burden but as a resource to be valorized through industrial symbiosis and regenerative flows. A key element of BETTED is the development of a toolbox for mapping and evaluating energy use, environmental impact, and economic implications across the entire chain, supporting stakeholders in identifying effective energy efficiency measures and renewable energy strategies while also considering behavioral factors, financing mechanisms, and policy recommendations. This enables tailored assessments adapted to the diversity of dairy products, demonstrating that the dairy sector, despite its structural complexity, can become a blueprint for circular industrial transformation, ultimately enhancing supply chain resilience and unlocking new opportunities for cross-sector collaboration and long-term value creation.
