English

This paper examines Greenland's energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables, focusing on the concept of energy sovereignty. Greenland could become an e-fuels hub for Europe using hydropower, but this creates new dependencies. The chapter argues for broader public participation in energy decisions to ensure genuine sovereignty.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

The paper contributes to global debates on energy sovereignty, particularly for remote regions transitioning to renewables. It highlights the tension between becoming an energy exporter and maintaining local control, relevant for emerging e-fuels economies and indigenous energy rights.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Greenland is still a fossil-dependent country, relying on oil and diesel for hunting and fishing, transportation, and fueling smaller communities that are not connected to hydropower systems. The Government of Greenland supports a prospect of taking up the position as a potential e-fuels and e-chemicals production hub for Europe and beyond, by expanding the country’s hydropower potential and sector cobbling with new industries. This could make Greenland an exporter of energy but also create dependencies on other markets, countries, and regions and open a broader discussion about energy sovereignty and security. Sovereignty is a contested concept and comes in many configurations – “energy sovereignty” being one of them. This chapter aims to introduce the energy transitions of Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) pertaining to renewable energy, hydropolitics, and energy sovereignty. The main lessons learned from this chapter is that energy choices are pivotal for Greenland in the years to come, but that this topic has not been discussed thoroughly beyond the government, and more participation and involvement are needed to foster energy sovereignty in Kalaallit Nunaat.
