Abstract This chapter explores how high school students at the Global Affairs summer camp engaged in deliberative simulations of Model United Nations to critically investigate issues of climate change and human rights. Utilizing qualitative data from the 2022 and 2024 camps, we examine how students navigated between Soft Global Citizenship and Critical Global Citizenship, developing nuanced understandings of sustainability, international cooperation, and democratic citizenship. Through role play, inquiry, and resolution-making, campers grappled with complex global issues, including the politics of the United Nations, the tension between national interests and collective action, and the inherent power dynamics shaping human rights discourses. The chapter highlights the pedagogical significance of simulations in fostering democratic engagement, empathy, and critical global perspectives in young learners.
