English

This study reviews the current status, potential, challenges and development strategy of solar energy in Bangladesh in the context of global decarbonization initiatives. It argues that land scarcity should not be equated with resource scarcity, highlighting rooftop solar and solar irrigation as major opportunities, alongside over six million installed solar home systems. Policy momentum from the National Rooftop Solar Programme is emphasized.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

For global readers, this paper illustrates how emerging economies frame renewable transition under land constraints, offering a Global South perspective on rooftop solar and solar irrigation as alternatives to utility-scale deployment. It complements TCFD/ISSB supply-chain disclosure debates by showing where Scope 3 abatement potential lies in garment-export economies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Climate change, clean energy, sustainable development, and future of the Earth are the most discussed topics in 21 st century. Today almost everybody is very much familiar to the effect of global warming and net-zero initiative. As fossil fuels are the major source of global warming and air pollution, and that is responsible for around five million premature deaths every year around the world. For both climate change and human health, we need to transition away from fossil fuels towards low carbon or clean energy sources. However, national geographical limitations of Bangladesh are often cited as a major obstacle to renewable-energy development. Land scarcity is certainly a serious constraint, but it should not be confused with an absence of renewable resources. The country has substantial opportunities in solar energy, rooftop generation, agricultural applications, wind, biomass, biogas and emerging technologies. Solar energy is clearly the leading renewable resource. Bangladesh receives substantial solar radiation throughout the year and the country has already demonstrated its ability to deploy solar technologies at scale. More than six million solar home systems have been installed, particularly in rural and off-grid areas. However, the major opportunity is rooftop solar. Bangladesh has millions of square meters of rooftops on factories, commercial buildings, educational institutions, hospitals and government offices. The ready-made garment sector alone provides an enormous opportunity for industrial rooftop solar. The National Rooftop Solar Programme has also given additional policy momentum to this approach. Rooftop generation does not require large quantities of agricultural land. Electricity can be generated close to the point of consumption, reducing pressure on the transmission network and lowering electricity costs for consumers. Again, another promising area is solar irrigation. Bangladesh has a large number of irrigation pumps, many of which depend on diesel or grid electricity. Solar-powered irrigation can reduce farmers’ exposure to fuel-price fluctuations while providing a cleaner and potentially more economical source of energy. In this investigative study author has discussed and explore the present state, potential, prospect, challenges and development strategy of solar energy of Bangladesh in contest of global initiative.
