Using a MESSAGE-based optimization model, this study assesses nuclear energy's role in China's electricity, industrial heat, and hydrogen supply. Opening inland sites with unrestricted technology choice could reach 490 GWe by 2060, supplying 17% of power, 50% of industrial heat, and 10% of clean hydrogen. Inland siting is the key determinant of capacity, while technology choice governs realization.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Nuclear energy is emerging as a promising option for providing a stable, low-carbon energy supply, playing a crucial role in global decarbonization efforts, particularly by enabling deep emissions reductions through comprehensive utilization. This study develops a quantitative optimization model to analyze the development of nuclear energy technologies in China based on the MESSAGE model to assess nuclear energy’s role in electricity generation, industrial process heat provision, and hydrogen production. The analyzed scenarios account for both geographical constraints and technological diversity. The results indicate that by opening inland sites and allowing unrestricted technological choices, by 2060, nuclear capacity in China could reach up to 490 GW e , supplying 17% of electricity, 50% of industrial process heat, and 10% of clean hydrogen production. In contrast, restricting deployment to coastal sites would reduce nuclear capacity to less than half this level, substantially limiting its contributions across all energy carriers. The analysis reveals that inland site accessibility is the primary determinant of the installed capacity of nuclear technologies, whereas technology selection governs the extent to which this potential is realized. This research provides methodological advances in nuclear energy modeling and offers a comprehensive evaluation of the role of nuclear energy in China’s energy transition.
