Numerical modeling assesses two promoted strategies for cutting beef's carbon costs: feed additives to reduce methane and grazing management to boost soil carbon sequestration. Even with realistic emission reductions, beef remains higher-emitting than pork, poultry, or dairy, and substitution is nutritionally adequate. The author argues dietary shifts offer greater societal benefit than these research thrusts.

📄 Abstract(原文)
I analyze research thrusts meant to reduce the carbon costs of the most resource intensive food item, beef. Using numerical modeling and data, I analyze the two most vigorously promoted ideas: Improving feed additives for reducing methane emissions, and enhancing soil carbon sequestration via better managed grazing. I find that even with the realistically expected emission reductions of these research thrusts, beef emissions remain higher than those associated with producing alternatives (including pork, poultry, or dairy). I also find that replacing beef with these alternatives is nutritionally adequate (save vitamin B12 for plant based substitutions, which requires supplementation). These sobering novel results are compounded by commercial beef’s well-established high environmental costs beyond emissions alone, and negative public health outcomes. Research into improving feed additives for reducing methane emissions, or into sequestration enhancing grazing management thus stands to benefit society less than dietary shifts. In developed economies, these disappointing results are a major barrier to achieving the emission reductions necessary for keeping global mean surface temperatures below 1.5K or even 2K above preindustrial levels. This reflects the fact that they address the two most enthusiastically publicly celebrated ideas in current agricultural sustainability discourse, and that they address a food item that generates 14-16% of total emissions.
