English

This study uses propensity score matching to examine how participation in SBTi, CDP, and NZBA affects financial institutions' capital structure. CDP participation reduces both risk-weighted and non-risk-weighted capital ratios, supporting a 'green halo effect' of perceived lower risk. SBTi participants show increased asset density (riskier exposures), while NZBA commitments have no significant impact. The findings highlight the signalling power of specific climate initiatives and implications for prudential oversight.

In the global GX context

As global disclosure frameworks (TCFD, ISSB, CSRD) and net-zero alliances (NZBA) expand, this paper provides empirical evidence on how climate commitments affect bank capital structure and prudential regulation. It informs the debate on the 'green halo' effect and whether climate initiatives reduce perceived risk, relevant for regulators and financial institutions worldwide.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This paper examines the impact of participation in three climate initiatives—Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA)—on the capital structure of financial institutions. Using a Propensity Score Matching approach, we analyse the changes in capital and leverage ratios following climate commitments. We find that CDP participation leads to reductions in both risk‐weighted and non‐risk‐weighted capital ratios, consistent with a ‘green halo effect’ whereby stakeholders perceive lower risk. SBTi participants show increased asset density, suggesting a shift towards riskier exposures, while NZBA commitments exhibit no significant impact. These results highlight the signalling power of specific climate initiatives and their implications for prudential oversight.
