English

A bibliometric study of 284 Web of Science papers (2000-2026) on green procurement in construction, analyzed with VOSviewer co-occurrence and overlay methods. It identifies five thematic domains—foundational procurement, institutional governance, circular economy, adoption barriers, and operational practice—that overlap and reinforce each other. Overlay analysis shows a clear temporal shift toward circular procurement as the dominant emerging direction.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

建設業はScope 3排出の大宗を占め、グリーン公共調達(GPP)は日本のGX推進・サプライチェーン脱炭素と直結する。調達基準の設計や循環型調達の潮流把握に資する。

In the global GX context

Green public procurement is a core lever in global disclosure and transition policy, linking construction supply chains to Scope 3 and circular-economy mandates. The paper's mapping of circular procurement trends helps frame where procurement standards are heading under CSRD and public-procurement rules.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Escalating environmental pressures, resource constraints, and increasing regulatory expectations are intensifying the need for more sustainable approaches within the construction sector, which remains a major contributor to global waste generation, resource consumption, and carbon emissions . In this context, green procurement (GP) has emerged as a critical mechanism shaping material selection, supply chain configurations, and markets for sustainable products and practices. By influencing supply and demand dynamics, it plays a central role in steering the sector toward more sustainable outcomes. Despite its recognized role in advancing sustainability transitions through approaches such as green public procurement (GPP), sustainable procurement (SP), and environmentally responsible sourcing, the literature remains fragmented across disciplines and thematic orientations, resulting in conceptual ambiguity and a limited understanding of how green procurement is structured and evolving within construction. To address this gap, this study employs a bibliometric approach to systematically examine the intellectual structure and development trajectory of green procurement research in construction. By examining global publication patterns, the study identifies prominent scholars, leading journals, influential countries, and emerging research themes and keyword trends within GP research in the construction sector. Drawing on the Web of Science database, a total of 284 studies published from 2000 to 2026 were evaluated using VOSviewer through co-occurrence and overlay analyses to identify thematic clusters, knowledge domains, and emerging research trends. The findings reveal five major thematic domains: (1) Foundational Procurement and Management Themes; (2) Institutional Frameworks and Environmental Governance Perspectives; (3) Circular Economy and Resource Flow Strategies; (4) Adoption Barriers and Implementation Challenges; and (5) Operational Practices and Construction Applications. These domains capture both regulatory and operational dimensions of green procurement and highlight the multidimensional nature of the field. The analysis further indicates significant conceptual overlap and interaction among clusters, suggesting that green procurement research evolves through interconnected and mutually reinforcing themes rather than isolated strands. Key concepts within these clusters reflect the principal theoretical and practical focal areas shaping the field. Overlay visualization further reveals the temporal evolution of the field, highlighting a growing shift toward circular procurement (CP) as a dominant and rapidly developing research direction that integrates circular economy (CE) principles into procurement strategies. By organizing and synthesizing dispersed knowledge, this study provides a structured and construction-specific understanding of green procurement research. The findings offer critical insights for policymakers, industry practitioners, and researchers by clarifying thematic priorities and supporting the development of more effective, resource efficient, and policy-informed procurement practices within construction management systems.
