English
Using 2000–2023 Indian data, the study builds a green equity market development index (PCA of market cap, traded value, turnover) and estimates its effect on carbon intensity and ecological footprint via dynamic ARDL. Green finance reduces both in the long run but not in the short run; FMOLS confirms robustness. Mediation analysis shows renewable capacity expansion—not green innovation—is the partial transmission channel.

In the global GX context
As ISSB/ISSB-aligned disclosure and transition finance frameworks expand, evidence on whether green equity capital actually shifts real-economy decarbonization is scarce. This paper's mediation finding—capacity expansion rather than innovation—offers a testable hypothesis for global transition-finance impact assessment and for regulators designing green capital channelling policies.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Financing renewable energy (RE) is a key factor in achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions and driving a sustainable transition. However, the role of green equity, a form of green finance that facilitates mobilising capital for clean energy firms, has received less attention. This study operationalises RE equity market development as measured by an index comprising the market capitalisation, traded value, and turnover ratio of green equities, developed using Principal Component Analysis. Employing annual data from 2000 to 2023, the study examines the impact of this green finance index on carbon intensity and ecological footprint in India and identifies the transmission channels through which this effect operates. Using the Dynamic Auto Regressive Distributed Lag simulation model, it is estimated that green finance reduces both carbon intensity and ecological footprint in the long run, but the effect is insignificant in the short run. The robustness test using the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares method confirms the findings. The study also employs Hayes’ PROCESS macro (model 4) and finds that green innovation does not act as a transmission channel, whereas installed renewable energy capacity acts as a partial mediator, suggesting that the environmental benefit of green finance operates through capacity expansion rather than an innovation-led pathway. These findings offer potential policy implications for financial regulators and energy policymakers on channelling capital from the green equity market toward RE deployment to achieve a sustainable, low-carbon energy transition in India.
