English
This paper positions engineered geosynthetics as an enabling technology that amplifies multiple high-impact climate solutions. It maps three pathways—landfill methane containment, albedo-enhanced bifacial PV yield, and embodied-carbon reduction via material efficiency and asset longevity—to Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, using case studies such as PTES and reinforced roadways. It argues geosynthetics offer quantifiable, cost-effective, immediately deployable decarbonization.

📄 Abstract(原文)
: Achieving rapid and scalable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions requires deploying proven infrastructure solutions that deliver measurable impact across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. While many decarbonization strategies focus on emerging technologies, a significant near-term opportunity lies in optimizing core infrastructure systems. This paper presents engineered geosynthetics as a critical enabling technology that amplifies the effectiveness of multiple high-impact climate solutions identified by Project Drawdown. The paper demonstrates how geosynthetics act as a force multiplier across three key pathways: (i) methane control through high-integrity containment systems in landfill applications, (ii) renewable energy enhancement via albedo-increasing ground covers that improve bifacial photovoltaic (PV) energy yield, and (iii) embodied carbon reduction in infrastructure through material efficiency, reduced haulage, and extended asset life. Case studies including pit thermal energy storage (PTES), landfill methane management systems, bifacial PV with albedo enhancement, and geosynthetic-reinforced roadways are mapped to emissions reductions across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3. The results highlight that geosynthetics deliver quantifiable emissions reductions while remaining cost-effective and immediately deployable. As such, they represent a scalable and under-recognized lever for accelerating global decarbonization across energy, waste, transportation, mining and water infrastructure systems.
