English

This review synthesizes opportunities, barriers, and policy frameworks for integrating renewable energy technologies (RETs) into maritime and transport decarbonization in developing economies. Drawing on case studies from India, Brazil, Ghana, and Nigeria, it highlights economic diversification and social benefits alongside financial, infrastructural, and equity barriers. It argues Nigeria could lead African maritime decarbonization through renewable resources and strategic location, contingent on strong policy and international partnerships.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Aligns with IMO's GHG strategy and the global push to decarbonize hard-to-abate shipping and transport. It adds developing-economy perspectives on RET deployment barriers and policy design, relevant to international climate finance and just-transition debates under TCFD/ISSB disclosure of transition risk.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The maritime and transport sector is a cornerstone of global connectivity, facilitating the movement of goods, yet it remains one of the hardest-to-abate industries in terms of carbon emissions. This article synthesizes opportunities for economic diversification, challenges in implementation, and evolving policy frameworks, drawing on case studies to provide actionable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers in developing economies. Renewable energy technologies (RETs) present transformative opportunities for developing economies, extending beyond emission reductions to encompass economic resilience, technological innovation, and social benefits. Despite the potential, several barriers hinder RET scaling in Nigeria. To illustrate practical applications, case studies from India, Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria are explored, highlighting implementation details, outcomes, and lessons. Nigeria has immense potential to lead Africa in maritime decarbonization by leveraging its renewable resources and strategic location. However, success requires overcoming financial, infrastructural, and equity barriers through strong policy implementation and international partnerships. Recommendations are therefore made for the Nigeria maritime sector to harness the potentials of integrating renewable energy technologies. Keywords: Decarbonization, Developing Economies, Global Connectivity, Renewable Energy Technologies
