As a result, maritime transport has lagged other indus- tries in decarbonizing. Governments and NGOs alike have set environmental goals for the industry to follow, while this has created supply for goods, it has not cre- ated the demand necessary to adopt green technologies. Procurement can be a valuable lever in generating demand for green technologies, thus bridging the fi- nancial gap necessary for the industry to decarbonize. This masters’ thesis explores the challenges pertaining to decarbonization in the maritime industry, the feasibility of procurement as a lever for change, the suc- cessful utilization of tendering in past, and the future outlook in procurement for the maritime industry. The study was conducted via several semi-structured inter- views with industry experts in procurement, sustainability, and the maritime in- dustry. The findings suggested that procurement can act as lever for decarbonization, all be it conditionally. According to the research, procurement remains a cost focused function that reacts, rather than shapes transitions. While procurement can initi- ate change, it can only be done via benevolence and proper support from stake- holders under ideal market conditions.
