English

This study quantifies spatiotemporal synergies and trade-offs between desertification control and soil carbon sequestration (2000–2020) in China's Horqin Sandy Land, coupling an improved MEDALUS-ESAI with SOC dynamics. Central-western areas showed stable carbon accumulation, while the southeastern agro-pastoral ecotone suffered contiguous 'double loss'. High-density afforestation may exceed soil moisture carrying capacity, posing a 'green desert' risk, and erosion zones show delayed SOC responses.

In the global GX context

For global disclosure scholarship, this paper cautions that nature-based solution claims (afforestation, carbon removal) require soil-moisture and time-lag caveats — relevant to ISSB/TNFD-aligned nature and carbon-removal disclosures and to integrity debates around land-based carbon credits.

📄 Abstract(原文)

While land desertification control (SDG 15.3) and climate change mitigation (SDG 13) are generally considered synergistic, their trade-offs in heavily human-modified temperate monsoon sandy ecosystems remain unclear. Focusing on the southern margin of China's Horqin Sandy Land, this study quantified the spatiotemporal synergies and trade-offs between desertification control and carbon sequestration (2000−2020) using a cross-classification matrix coupling an improved Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use (MEDALUS)-Environmentally Sensitive Area Index (ESAI) with soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. Results indicate: (1) A spatially divergent pattern emerged. The central-western sandy lands successfully established an extensive resilient baseline (“Stable”), interspersed with localized carbon accumulation patches (“Synergy”). Conversely, the southeastern agro-pastoral ecotone suffered a contiguous “Double loss” (heightened environmental sensitivity and carbon depletion), spatially corresponding to agricultural intensification and potential groundwater overdraft. (2) In some marginal ecotones, patches with reduced desertification sensitivity exhibited constrained soil carbon accumulation. This spatial mismatch suggests that early high-density afforestation might have exceeded local soil moisture carrying capacities, posing a hidden “green desert” risk that overdraws long-term ecological resilience. (3) Zones subject to severe composite wind-water erosion frequently overlapped with delayed SOC responses despite observed surface ecological improvements (a potential “time-lag” effect). This alignment indicates that erosion likely compromises the physical soil carbon protection, delaying the translation of ecological recovery into long-term carbon sinks. Consequently, dryland spatial planning should move beyond focusing solely on apparent vegetation coverage. Adopting differentiated Nature-based Solutions (NbS) governed by strict soil moisture constraints and drought early-warning systems is essential to achieve SDG synergies in global drylands.
