English
This study provides high-resolution fossil fuel CO2 emissions for the Phoenix-Mesa urban area (2010–2022), a fast-growing desert city. Emissions composition and intensity vary across county, urban-area, and city scales, driven by demographic, structural, and geographic factors. Urban sprawl has shifted from city to agglomeration scale, and large discrepancies with government self-reported inventories arise from differing methods and assumptions. The granular data supports city climate action planning and mitigation evaluation.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
This work contributes to the global push for granular, spatially explicit emissions data that can underpin city-level climate action and verification, complementing frameworks like TCFD/ISSB that increasingly demand sub-national disclosure. It highlights methodological gaps between bottom-up inventories and self-reported data, relevant to CSRD and SEC climate disclosure debates.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Accurate quantification of the relationship between urban characteristics and fossil fuel CO 2 (FFCO 2 ) emissions at sub-city spatial scales is crucial for effective emissions mitigation and sustainable urban development. However, few urban studies have sufficient granularity to examine these relationships and their variations in space and time. This study focuses on characterizing sector-specific FFCO 2 emissions and emission intensities in the Phoenix-Mesa urban area (UA), one of the fastest-developing U.S. cities in a desert environment. The FFCO 2 emission compositions and intensities vary significantly across three spatial scales (County, UA, and individual cities), and are driven by different demographic, urban–structural, and geographic characteristics. Analysis over the 2010–2022 spatial pattern suggests that urban sprawl has shifted from the city to the urban agglomeration scale. Comparison to a government self-reported inventory shows large emission discrepancies driven by different methodological approaches and assumptions. The granular FFCO 2 emissions data introduced here will support city climate action planning and evaluation of mitigation progress.
