Blue carbon ecosystems, particularly mangroves and seagrass meadows, are increasingly recognized as effective nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation due to their high carbon sequestration rates and long-term carbon storage in coastal sediments. This chapter examines blue carbon as a climate mitigation strategy by integrating ecological processes, carbon accounting approaches, and emerging carbon market mechanisms within the blue economy framework. It synthesizes current understanding of carbon storage dynamics, ecosystem distribution, degradation drivers, and restoration potential of mangroves and seagrasses. The chapter also discusses the integration of blue carbon into international climate policies and voluntary carbon markets as a pathway to mobilize sustainable financing.
