English

This study reports the first pilot campaign of a twin-reactor pressure–temperature-swing unit using aqueous 4 M imidazole to upgrade biogas to biomethane. Unlike MEA scrubbing, which regenerates at 120–140 °C, imidazole regenerates at 30–40 °C, sharply cutting thermal energy demand. Across 5–20 bar, 10–30 mL/min liquid flow and 10–40 °C absorber/desorber conditions, the best run reached 97.2% CH4 purity, while 5 bar stayed below 88%. Replacing imidazole with water dropped purity from 95.9% to 91.0%, confirming the sorbent's chemical role.

In the global GX context

Biomethane upgrading sits within global decarbonization pathways for hard-to-abate gas use and renewable gas targets (e.g. EU RED III, REPowerEU). A low-regeneration-energy capture route is relevant to CCUS and carbon-removal cost curves, though this is an early lab-scale proof of concept rather than a deployable cost benchmark.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Upgrading raw biogas to biomethane requires the selective removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from a methane-rich (CH4) stream so that the product meets the specifications for grid injection or transport-fuel use. Conventional monoethanolamine (MEA) scrubbing achieves this separation but at a significant thermal energy cost: sorbent regeneration at 120–140 °C consumes 3.5–4.0 GJ per tonne of CO₂ removed [15,16], a penalty that constrains deployment in energy-limited contexts. Imidazole-based sorbents offer a mechanistically distinct alternative: rather than forming covalent carbamate intermediates, they engage CO2 through a reversible acid–base equilibrium producing bicarbonate salts, whose weaker thermodynamic interaction [18, 19, 20]. Indeed, prior work on aqueous imidazole solutions has shown reversible bicarbonate-forming CO2 uptake with regeneration achievable at 30–40 °C putting it at 1.1 GJ/TonCO2 [27] motivating its selection as the absorbent for the BEAST (Biogas Enrichment via Advanced Separation Techniques) pressure–temperature-swing prototype reported here [18, 21]. This work reports the first experimental campaign on the laboratory-scale prototype that is a twin-reactor unit that couples a cold absorber and a warm regenerator (desorber) in a pressure–temperature-swing configuration. Each reactor was filled with an aqueous 4 M imidazole solution acting as the CO2-selective absorbent. A parametric study was carried out across operating pressures of 5–20 bar, liquid (pump) flow rates of 10–30 mL/min, feed-gas flow rates of 100 mL/min, absorber temperatures of 10–15 °C and desorber temperatures of 30–40 °C. Product-gas methane purity increased with pressure, with liquid circulation and with desorber temperature. The best operating point delivered 97.2% CH4 in the product stream, approaching biomethane-grade purity. Runs at 5 bars remained below 88% CH4. Replacing the imidazole solution with water lowered the product purity from 95.9% to 91.0% under otherwise identical conditions, confirming the chemical contribution of the absorbent. Overall, the results provide a proof of concept for imidazole-based pressure–temperature-swing absorption as a compact, low-regeneration-energy route to biogas upgrading and map the operating envelope for further optimisation.
