English
A targeted literature review of alkali-activated clay composites as low-carbon construction materials. It covers binder chemistry (N-A-S-H, C-A-S-H, C-S-H), mechanical, durability and thermal properties, environmental impacts, and architectural applications. Performance depends on clay mineralogy, calcination, activator type, and curing. The authors stress that environmental value hinges on the full material cycle and that these composites complement rather than replace concrete.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
日本のGX文脈において
建設分野の脱炭素はScope 3排出の大宗を占め、日本でも建材由来CO2削減は重要課題。ただし本稿は材料科学レビューで、SSBJ・有報開示や投資家対応への直接的接続は弱い。
In the global GX context
Cement and concrete account for roughly 8% of global CO2, making low-carbon alternative binders relevant to Scope 3 accounting and CSRD/ISSB building-sector disclosures. The review's emphasis on full life-cycle assessment aligns with emerging embodied-carbon disclosure expectations.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Alkali-activated clay composites represent an emerging class of low-carbon construction materials which combine clay-based resources, aluminosilicate reactions, and circular use of materials. In this context, this study explores alkali-activated clay composites as candidates for sustainable construction and architectural applications. The paper is formulated as a targeted literature re view of materials, derived from a broader review of clay-based composite materials, focusing specifically on alkali-activated systems. The literature review covers material science fundamentals, mechanical and durability properties, thermal properties, environmental impacts, architectural applicability, and technical limitations. In the reviewed literature, alkali-activated clay composites have been shown to be different from the stabilized clay systems because of their dependency on a chemical transformation process, as opposed to only physical strengthening or additive stabilization. The process of forming such composites is based on the dissolution of reactive silica and alumina of clay-based or aluminosilicate-containing raw materials through alkaline reaction followed by formation of N-A-S-H, C-A-S-H, or C-S-H binders. Important factors affecting performance include clay minerals composition, calcination conditions, type of activator and its concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, calcium content, curing conditions, and porosity characteristics. Experimental studies conducted with calcined clay-rich sediments and mixtures with fly ash or slag indicate that the material under consideration may reach desired performance levels for certain construction purposes depending on proper mix proportioning and curing. Environmentally, alkali-activated clay composites may contribute to a circular construction strategy based on local clay resources, construction residuals, water-treatment sludges, fly ash, slag, and other waste materials as sources of raw materials. At the same time, their environmental value will depend on the whole material cycle, which comprises calcination, activator manufacturing, curing, transportation, and disposal. From the architectural standpoint, the main application opportunities relate to the use of the material in non-structural blocks, panels, mortars, plasters, prefabricated items, envelopes, and certain repair mortars compatible with heritage architecture. It may be concluded that the use of alkali-activated clay composites cannot substitute concrete as an all-purpose construction material. Instead, this new material class is worth considering due to a combination of its low carbon footprint, local and waste-based materials, and architectural application opportunities.
