This study quantifies incremental transport GHG emissions from pipeline rerouting, alternative terminals, and supplier substitution under three six-month Hormuz disruption scenarios. Added transport emissions are similar across scenarios (5.9–6.4 Mt CO2e) but redistribute between pipeline and shipping. Because Gulf producers' upstream emission intensities vary widely, replacing high-EI Iranian/Iraqi crude with U.S. crude can offset the transport penalty, whereas replacing Qatar's cleaner LNG reliably adds emissions.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The Strait of Hormuz carries approximately 14.3 million barrels per day of crude oil and 78 Mt yr-1 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from major Middle Eastern producers, making it the most critical maritime chokepoint for global energy trade. A disruption at this corridor would compel producers to activate bypass infrastructure and importers to source alternative supply, each option carrying distinct greenhouse gas (GHG) emission consequences. This study develops a transport-emission accounting framework that quantifies the incremental GHG emissions from pipeline rerouting, alternative-terminal utilization, and supplier replacement under three operationally grounded six-month disruption scenarios. The framework couples country-level upstream emission intensities (EIs) from the Oil Production Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimator (OPGEE v3.0c) and a measurement-informed LNG life-cycle assessment (LCA) with IMO-based pipeline and shipping emission factors. Scenario 1 combines partial Saudi rerouting to Yanbu and UAE rerouting to Fujairah with maximum U.S. replacement of Iranian and Iraqi crude and Qatari LNG. Scenario 2 adds Iraqi rerouting through Turkey's Ceyhan terminal, limiting U.S. crude replacement to Iranian volumes. Scenario 3 maximizes regional bypass by rerouting Iranian crude through the Jask terminal, restricting U.S. involvement to LNG. The added transport emissions are similar across scenarios (5.9–6.4 Mt CO2e over six months) but redistribute between pipeline and shipping. When supplier-substitution effects on upstream EI are included, the net outcome is governed by the extreme EI heterogeneity of Gulf producers (Saudi Arabia 1.24 versus Iran 13.11 g CO2e MJ−1): because displaced Iranian and Iraqi barrels are exceptionally carbon-intensive, replacing them with U.S. crude tends to offset—and can exceed—the transport penalty, whereas replacing Qatar's comparatively clean LNG with higher-EI U.S. LNG reliably adds emissions. The one robust, always-positive cost of disruption is the transport penalty; upstream methane and flaring mitigation at high-EI producers matters more to the total outcome than the routing choice itself.
