English

This study systematically reviews ISO standards supporting corporate climate neutrality. Using PRISMA, it analyzes standards from 2015-2025 with keywords on carbon capture, footprint, storage, and greenhouse gases. 43 standards were identified, mostly from ISO/TC 207 and 265, revealing an abundance of measurement/reporting standards but a gap in mitigation guidance.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, ISO standards underpin many climate disclosure frameworks (e.g., ISSB references). This mapping highlights the current focus on monitoring/reporting and the lack of mitigation standards, which is critical for aligning standards with the IPCC's mitigation strategies and filling the gap for practical guidance.

Provides a systematic overview of existing ISO climate standards and identifies research gaps, particularly the lack of mitigation-focused standards.

Helps corporate sustainability teams identify which ISO standards are available for carbon accounting and reporting, and flags the need for more guidance on mitigation measures.

Highlights the imbalance in ISO standards between monitoring and mitigation, suggesting that policymakers should encourage development of mitigation-related international standards.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study analyses the availability of ISO standards to support companies in achieving climate neutrality. A systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA methodology, examined ISO standards published between 2015 and April 2025 containing at least one of the four keywords in the title or abstract: carbon capture, carbon footprint, carbon storage and greenhouse gas. The analysis selected 43 documents, developed mainly by the ISO Technical Committees 207 and 265, highlighting growing interest in the topic in recent years. The standards identified are primarily related to Target 13.2 of the 2030 Agenda, concerning the integration of climate change measures into national strategies and policies. Support for the other targets of Sustainable Development Goal 13 is limited or absent. Furthermore, the standards mainly support the monitoring and evaluation strategy defined by the IPCC: the analysis reveals an abundance of standards related to measurement and reporting, while international guidance dedicated to mitigation measures remains limited.
