English

This paper provides a dataset and code demonstrating that concentrated carbon debt from hydropower reservoirs reduces the climate benefits of hydropower as grid decarbonization advances. It highlights that carbon debt, including methane emissions from reservoirs, is crucial for evaluating hydropower's low-carbon credentials.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This work challenges the assumption that hydropower is inherently low-carbon, showing that carbon debt from reservoirs can significantly erode its climate benefit as grids decarbonize. It is relevant for global hydropower operators and energy planners reassessing renewable energy portfolios.

Energy system modelers and carbon accounting researchers should consider these findings when assessing lifecycle emissions of hydropower.

Hydropower plant operators can use this data to better measure and manage carbon debt, improving transparency in reporting.

Policymakers should incorporate carbon debt into renewable energy planning and subsidy designs for hydropower.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This repository contains the current Science-format figure pipeline, derived station-level inputs, shared calculation modules, concise panel-level audit data, and rendered manuscript figures for: Concentrated carbon debt and grid decarbonization erode the climate benefit of global hydropower The active submission set consists of four main figures and eighteen supplementary figures. The archive is designed to re-render the figures from the included harmonized and derived data products. Large third-party raw datasets are not bundled; see [External data not included](#external-data-not-included) for upstream rebuild requirements. The record is currently under embargo and will be made publicly available upon publication; during peer review it is available to the editors and referees on request.
