English
The SEMPRE-BIO project assesses GHG profiles of three biomethane pathways combining anaerobic digestion with cryogenic separation or catalytic methanation (including PEM electrolysis hydrogen) and pyrolysis with methanation. Using both ISO 14040/44 LCA and the EU RED value-chain framework, all cases show high mitigation potential, but results diverge substantially due to treatment of renewable electricity and co-products. Methodological consistency is critical for evaluating innovative biomethane systems.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Directly relevant to EU RED and broader renewable gas certification, this work illustrates how methodological choices (renewable electricity, co-product allocation) drive GHG outcomes — a key issue for ISSB/CSRD-aligned emissions accounting and transition finance for biomethane and carbon-recycling projects.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This contribution presents preliminary results of a comprehensive assessment of GHG emission profiles of innovative technologies analysed and investigated in the SEMPRE-BIO project. Three biomethane production pathways have been assessed using two complementary approaches: (i) an ISO 14040/44-based LCA focusing on core process performance, and (ii) an evaluation under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) framework covering the entire value chain. The concepts combine anaerobic digestion with either cryogenic gas separation or catalytic methanation, and include the integration of renewable hydrogen via PEM electrolysis. They also combine pyrolysis with catalytic methanation. The results show high GHG mitigation potentials for all case studies. The comparison of both methodological approaches highlights substantial differences in results, particularly due to the treatment of renewable electricity and co-products under EU RED. These findings emphasize the importance of methodological consistency when evaluating innovative biomethane systems.
