English

This paper presents an integrative framework for siting utility-scale renewable energy projects, combining future development potential, environmental considerations (e.g., biodiversity), and spatially explicit social values. It outlines methods for integrating these components across scales and geographies, addressing sustainability tradeoffs while prioritizing low-impact areas. The guidelines provide tools, datasets, and best practices to support decision-making for sustainable RE expansion.

📄 Abstract(原文)

<title>Abstract</title> <p>Background Transforming the energy sector, responsible for ~ 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, is critical to mitigating climate change, but large-scale renewable energy (RE) risks compromising biodiversity and rural livelihoods if sited poorly. Recognizing that current project-by-project approaches to implementation and management are likely inadequate given the scale and pace of RE deployment, the concept of designating priority zones for development is gaining momentum. Yet, comprehensive guidance remains lacking. Results We present an integrative framework for mapping priority areas for utility-scale RE projects, to advance a sustainable transition. The framework combines (1) future development potential, (2) environmental considerations (e.g., ecological or biodiversity attributes), and (3) spatially explicit social values and indicators (e.g., social-ecological, economic, and cultural attributes). We also outline methods for integrating these components, demonstrating their application across scales and geographies, and addressing sustainability tradeoffs while prioritizing low impact areas. Conclusions These guidelines provide tools, datasets, and best practices to support decision-making, offering a blueprint for sustainable RE expansion that guides development to areas of lower impact for people and nature.</p>
