English

This study qualitatively assesses demand-side climate mitigation potential in Russia by analyzing ~190,000 posts from environmental communities on VKontakte. Using social practice theory, it identifies 80 household practices across housing, transport, food, and goods. Waste reduction, plant-based nutrition, and sharing are well-embedded, while housing and transport show critical 'blind spots' lacking meanings, competences, and infrastructure.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

日本では家庭部門の排出削減やカーボンフットプリント可視化が政策課題だが、本論文は社会実践理論とSNS分析という手法を提供。需要側アプローチの設計に示唆を与える。

In the global GX context

While focused on Russia, this paper contributes to global demand-side mitigation scholarship by operationalizing social practice theory for household carbon footprint reduction. It offers a replicable qualitative method for identifying 'blind spots' in low-carbon practice adoption, relevant to policymakers designing consumption-focused climate strategies beyond technological fixes.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Climate policy focused primarily on the technological modernization of production has shown limited effectiveness in curbing greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, the scientific community has substantiated the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses not only production but also final consumption, which accounts for more than half of global emissions. Demandside solutions target the root causes of the carbon footprint: the transformation of social practices, consumption patterns, and the infrastructures that underpin them. They therefore offer a strategic shift from regulating technologies to changing everyday routines and systems of provision. Despite the significant contribution of households to global greenhouse gas emissions, the potential for reducing the carbon footprint through demand transformation in Russia remains understudied. This study aims to assess this potential qualitatively by analyzing the embeddedness of low-carbon social practices in Russian online discourse. The theoretical framework is based on a synthesis of social practice theory and socio-technical transitions theory. This approach makes it possible to view households as carriers of practices embedded in material and normative contexts. The empirical basis consists of a secondary analysis of a large dataset of approximately 190,000 posts from Russian environmental communities on VKontakte. The analysis identified 80 social practices and clustered them thematically. An integrative approach was applied, combining: (1) the identification of target practices for transformation in key sectors—housing, transport, food, and goods—based on international research; (2) the analytical categorization of discursive practices according to their constituent elements: materials, competences, and meanings; (3) qualitative mapping to assess the “readiness” of these practices for transformation. Readiness for transformation is highly uneven. Practices related to waste reduction, plant-based nutrition, and sharing demonstrate a high degree of embeddedness, with all the necessary elements in place. Significant “blind spots” remain in the housing and transport sectors, where the requisite meanings, competences, and infrastructural narratives are absent. To realize the potential for emissions reduction, policies should deliberately construct the missing elements of practices in these “blind spots” while supporting the scaling-up of already established niche lowcarbon practices.
