Nigeria’s construction and housing sector is at a critical turning point. Rapid urbanisation, a projected population surpassing 250 million by 2030, a housing deficit of over 20 million units, and rising climate vulnerabilities demand a shift toward sustainable, affordable, and resilient building solutions. Yet the sector remains constrained by high costs, outdated practices, weak regulation, limited skills, and fragmented supply chains. This Sustainable Construction Pathway Report examines the current state of Nigeria’s built environment, identifies innovation already occurring locally, and outlines priority areas where a UK and Nigeria partnership can unlock large-scale transformation. Drawing on stakeholder interviews, five focus group discussions, and surveys, the report shows that while 90% of stakeholders understand the concept of sustainable construction, adoption remains limited to high-end or donor-supported projects. Innovation, such as prefabrication, low carbon cement, modular construction, recycled materials, digital tools, and circular-economy models.
