English
The SYRIUS project integrates a 4.2 MW solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) into a steel plant to cut fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions. Operating near 700°C with steam recovered from steel processes, it achieves high efficiency (<39 kWh/kgH2). Hydrogen substitutes natural gas in a reheating furnace, with by-product oxygen also utilized. The demo targets 100 kg/h H2 over 5,000 hours and 5,600 t CO2/year reduction; this paper reports first-year progress and challenges.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Steel decarbonisation is central to global net-zero pathways, and this EU demonstration of SOEC integration into an existing steelworks offers transferable engineering evidence for hard-to-abate industry. It complements global disclosure frameworks (ISSB/CSRD) by providing concrete Scope 1 abatement data for transition planning.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The SYRIUS project* (SOEC hydrogen integration and circular use in steelmaking process) aims at integrating a 4.2 MWel Solid Oxide Electrolyser (SOEC) into the process line of a steel plant to reduce fossil fuels use and CO2 emissions. The electrolyser is designed by Baker Hughes with SOEC stacks manufactured by Elcogen, operating at nearly 700°C with high electrical efficiency (specific consumption <39 kWhel/kgH2) and utilizing steam recovered from the steel plant processes. The project focuses on an application within a steelworks, where hydrogen can substitute part of the natural gas consumption of a fuel-flexible furnace for steel reheating, whose features are addressed by Tenova. The furnace can also employ the oxygen-enriched air stream generated by the electrolyser, in an optimized circularity perspective.<br>The innovative SOEC plant system will be demonstrated for the production of 100 kg/h of hydrogen over 5,000 operational hours, validating the feasibility of integrating the SOEC technology within a complex industrial environment and with the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 5,600 t/year during the project. This paper addresses advancements achieved and challenges faced in the first year of the project.
