Abstract The UK has a legally binding net zero target for 2050 and agriculture currently contributes around 10% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. Barley is the second most commonly grown crop in the UK and efforts are being made, particularly in the brewing sector, to minimise emissions from barley production. This study quantified current GHG emissions for UK malting barley production including the current adoption rates of mitigation measures, compared current mitigation options to reduce GHG emissions, and evaluated the overall potential of achieving net zero malting barley production in 2050 based on these options. Direct and indirect emissions across scopes 1, 2, and 3 were included, soil carbon sequestration benefits were modelled as potential yield increases reflecting the finite capacity of soil carbon storage, and mitigation options that reduce cropping intensity were excluded to avoid land use change emissions and carbon opportunity costs. Current emissions for UK malting barley production were quantified as 203.4 kg CO 2 e per tonne for spring barley and 230.4 kg CO 2 e per tonne for winter barley. Intercropping with legumes was projected to provide the largest reduction in GHG emissions (26.4 - 63.4 kg CO 2 e/t) followed using urease and nitrification inhibitors in inorganic fertilisers (16.4 - 35.4 kg CO 2 e/t). Optimising soil pH was projected to increase overall GHG emissions due to emissions associated with lime production and application. A best-case scenario found a 39% and 43% reduction in GHG emissions from the baseline for spring (141 kg CO 2 e/t) and winter malting barley (130 kg CO 2 e/t), respectively.
