English

The pulp and paper industry generates large amounts of waste (bark, black liquor, lignocellulosic sludge) that can be converted into methane as an energy source. This methane production enhances national energy security, helps decarbonize paper production, and reduces reliance on conventional energy. The chapter discusses the energy transition towards methane production for waste management and environmental impact reduction.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The current emphasis on environmental responsibility requires all industrial sectors to achieve climate neutrality or carbon negativity by adopting green processes and technologies. In general, different waste management ideas come to mind, like pinch technology, intensification, decarbonization, and the energy transition. In industry, pulp and paper have more potential for targeting due to their enormous waste generation, which consists of bark and black liquor, high lignocellulosic forms of sludge, and other waste. These waste feedstocks can be transformed into an energy source as methane. This methane production enhances nation energy security concerns, helps decarbonize the paper production process, and reduces the overload on conventional sources of energy. This chapter gives insight into the energy transition towards methane production and how it can be used for paper and pulp industrial waste management to minimize their impact on the environment.
