English

This study develops a laser-based ignition device for the Allam cycle, an oxy-combustion process combining efficient power generation with CO2 capture under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. It details design features, integrity monitoring, plasma characterization, and combustion tests below 30 barg, identifying ignition conditions with the highest success rate and assessing post-ignition durability. An alternative hot-spot approach exceeding autoignition temperature is also discussed.

📄 Abstract(原文)

In the current global context, where reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a priority, the energy sector faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable solutions. Carbon capture and storage is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing CO2 emissions from power generation, with oxy-combustion emerging as one of the most promising technologies for combining low emissions with high performance. The Allam cycle, an innovative oxy-combustion-based process, integrates efficient power generation with CO2 capture. However, its high-pressure and high-temperature conditions present significant technical challenges, particularly in identifying a reliable ignition device for initiating combustion. This article proposes a laser-based ignition device designed to withstand harsh process conditions. Key design features, system integrity monitoring strategies, and specific solutions for high-pressure and high-temperature environments are detailed. The study also analyzes the characteristics of the generated plasma and presents results from combustion tests conducted at pressure below 30 barg. System performance is evaluated, highlighting the ignition conditions that have achieved the highest success rate for reliable operation. The study will also analyze the behavior of the ignition system after ignition occurs, to investigate its capability to withstand combustion conditions without losing functionality or compromising overall system integrity, a key requirement for applying the ignition system in industrial-scale applications. The study will also discuss an alternative approach based on the creation of a hot spot inside the combustion chamber to generate a temperature higher than the autoignition.
