Nature is significantly endangered due to the widespread release of greenhouse gases, which add to global warming emergencies. In response, industries around the world are striving to lessen their dependence on fossil fuels and petroleum-derived materials, opting instead for biobased, sustainable, and eco-friendly alternatives. Biorefineries are expected to make effective use of rich biomass resources in a sustainable way, ensuring energy security, addressing climate change, and satisfying the growing demand for chemicals and materials. This section focuses on the processes involved in producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via biorefinery methods. It provides an overview of various production techniques and explores the views on totally synthesized SAF, along with directions and opportunities in this area. Specifically, it discusses innovations in feedstock, conversion technologies, enabling end uses, and policy and valuation analyses. The chapter emphasizes the simultaneous production of chemicals, fuels, and value-added products in biorefineries.
