A cradle-to-grave LCA of a 41 t diesel-electric RTG crane per ISO 14040/14044/14067. Baseline footprint is 3,735.73 t CO2e per crane (1.868 kg CO2e/TEU), with the use phase contributing 84.77%. Monte Carlo analysis confirms operational energy and generator efficiency dominate, and site-specific fuel intensity is critical for transferability.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Container terminals are simultaneously advancing automation and digitalization while facing increasingly stringent greenhouse-gas (GHG) reduction requirements. However, product-level life-cycle evidence for large cargo-handling equipment remains scarce, particularly when engineering bill of materials (BOMs), process-specific factory records, logistics, long-term operation, and end-of-life treatment are integrated in one transparent inventory. This study aims to quantify the life-cycle carbon footprint of a representative 41 t diesel–electric rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane, identify its dominant emission hotspots, and test the robustness of the resulting decarbonization priorities. A cradle-to-grave system boundary was implemented following ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14067. The functional unit is one twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) handled, with a reference system of one RTG operating for 20 years at 100,000 TEU/year. The inventory combines an engineering BOMs covering nearly 2000 components, 12 months of process-specific production records, and identified secondary or proxy data for selected transport, use, and end-of-life processes; use-phase energy demand is based on comparable diesel–electric RTGs rather than a 20-year measurement of the target crane. The adopted diesel life-cycle emission factor is 3.797 kg CO2e/kg diesel. The baseline footprint is 3735.73 t CO2e per RTG, or 1.868 kg CO2e/TEU. The use phase contributes 84.77%, followed by raw-material acquisition and inbound transport (9.93%), product distribution (4.02%), manufacturing (1.21%), and represented end-of-life treatment (0.08%). Parameter-specific deterministic scenarios and a 10,000-run Monte Carlo analysis evaluate uncertainty. The Monte Carlo median is 3675.97 t CO2e per RTG, with a 95% simulation interval of 2854.48–4696.58 t CO2e; normalized intensity ranges from 1.625 to 2.096 kg CO2e/TEU. The use phase remains the largest life-cycle contributor in every simulation. These results show that operational energy demand and generator efficiency govern the life-cycle footprint under the modelled diesel–electric configuration, while also demonstrating that site-specific fuel intensity is a critical transferability parameter.
